Case Study: TDM Contracts Limited

The Role:

TDM ContractsQS Advisor Limited was employed by TDM Contracts Limited (TDM) to mentor/advise the company on an effective commercial/contractural approach to their projects. It is important to note that this was a temporary moved by the owners of this business. Our director, Grant Tod personally looked after this account, working directly with the company owners. This role included looking at their project process, from project win through to final account.

The main areas we looked at were:
Change management procedures & relevant
Valuation/variation/final account
forecasting procedure with client
Subcontractor payments, payment/payless notices

“QS Advisor are a friendly, approachable and professional company whom we have benefited from their assistance in various areas within our company”

During Grant’s time with the directors, they started to understand the necessity of having someone with a commercial background on board, so the temporary position has ended up being a long-term relationship, where QS Advisor work a day a week with TDM either in their office or out on site.

The biggest change for their business was securing the additional monies for additional works/variations carried out on site. Previously, the directors relied on the Main Contractor (MC) to back up any verbal instruction with a formal instruction. This did not seem to be happening as when it came to valuation certification states the MC’s surveyor would state “works not instructed”

Grant, then put in motion the company buying CVI (Confirmaton of Verbal Instruction) books, which is a more formal method of instruction as it includes the need for the MC site management team signing these off.

This has proved to be not only an effective tool for TDM, but also for the MC in that the MC management do need to timeously send instruction after instruction and they can also concentrate on completing the project.
